New Zealand is a small island nation created 80 million years ago when it separated from Australia and today 2000 kilometres of ocean lie between the two countries.

A large portion of New Zealand’s most pristine and remote country is covered in native forests. New Zealand’s temperate climate and extreme isolation have resulted in the evolution of entirely unique fauna and flora. Of the 2000 indigenous plant species, about 1500 are found nowhere else in the world. It appears that many of the trees and plants that survived were ones that produced bio-active compounds that enhanced the health and longevity of the pollinators on which they depended. By doing so, the insect and bird populations flourished and thus the future of these species was assured.

The Maori who arrived on our shores in 700 AD, were first to discover that these were equally beneficial to humans and this knowledge of the restorative powers of New Zealand native plants and marine life forms the basis of “Rongoa Maori”- traditional Maori medicine still practiced today. European settlers who arrived in New Zealand in the early 1800’s were often living in settlements remote from a doctor and so came to appreciate the seemingly “miraculous powers” of Maori remedies and the native plants which they were surrounded. It was these early settlers that introduced domestic bees which collected nectar from native forests and in particular from the Manuka bush found in abundance throughout New Zealand. The nectar is concentrated by honeybees to create Manuka honey which made the health giving properties of New Zealand native forests more readily available to all.

Manuka Honey attracted the attention of Professor Peter Molan of University of Waikato more than 30 years ago whose work has confirmed Manuka Honey inhibits a wide range of pathogens including antibiotic resistant bacteria.

No harsh chemical cleaners are entering the environment inside or outside of the plant. Our closed hot water system is designed to maximize water recycling. We re-use the materials we are able to, and recycle in our processing facility, our warehouse and our offices.

Our beekeeping operation received the Massey University Discovery Award in the 2011 Balance Farm Environment Awards in recognition of new discovery and implementation of economically and environmentally sustainable farming systems. The Award recognises farmers and farming families who have been proactive in discovering new knowledge and applying that knowledge to move their farming business to a more sustainable state.

We develop, manufacture and market our products to ensure we remain in control of quality every step of the way. Our comprehensive system provides traceability from beehive to shelf. All of the raw materials we use in our products must meet our rigorous standards of quality and safety to ensure the levels of bioactive compounds are maintained.
